A common exercise for individuals with autism and especially children, is that of identifying animals they would be expected to come across on a daily basis. In this part of the software, the child is presented visually with a series of animals and asked (verbally and textually) to identify which of the images the object corresponds to. The child then needs to select by touching the correct animal. If the child selects correctly, then a short commendation is given and the next object identification question appears. After the conclusion of a series of tasks the child is again commended with a generic ‘well done’ screen. If the child does not choose successfully then, rather than reprimanded harshly, a simple message asking him/her to try again is given. There are currently three levels that can be played by the user. Each incremental level increases in difficulty by having the equivalent number of images that the user can select from in each question.
Throughout the design process, the screens are kept minimalistic (in terms of graphics and animations) in order to assist the child with autism to focus on the task at hand. Furthermore, the excess use of graphics or moving objects may deter the user by making him or her feel stressed and uneasy.
